Karaoke.

You know how comedians, on those occasions where they are giving a SERIOUS interview about their craft, all talk about how the laughter of the crowd is like a drug?

I think I understand what they mean now.

Of course, Matt and I (the same Matt who’s on my Blogroll over there) didn’t get any laughter. We got an OVATION. Okay, well it felt like an ovation after several tequila & tonics. But there were some relatively sober people present who confirmed that our performance was quite excellent. And there was further proof in the form of the ladies of The Hutch wanting to dance with me for the rest of the evening.

I think Matt got the same response, he just had enough sense (or sobriety) not to get up and dance.

The story goes like this: I was late to get out to the bar and a lot of the songs I wanted to do (easier ones) had already been sung. So, I had sort of resigned myself to not singing. I think it was Matt’s idea to do a duet. Once I agreed to that I pointed out that “If we’re going to do a duet, we might as well pick a really hard one”.

Wise advice.

So the song was Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me by Elton John and George Michael. I know… that’s a few steps above where most karaoke types will go. But Matt and I we’re hardcore. That’s just how we roll. There is rumored to be a video that I haven’t seen yet… you’ll be the first to know when I do.

I even was given the privilege of singing the last song of the night. After some confusion involving some silly song having to do with a home in Alabama, I was brought up to sing Wanted Dead or Alive. Can I just say that, someday, I’m going to meet Jon Bon Jovi and I’ll punch him right in his pretty nose? Is that allowed? It should be. This song is HARD to sing in the correct key.

According to the friends I had left in the crowd, I did well. But I have to admit that my voice had given out by the end. Still, I limped through it and got another round of applause. And I REALLY liked that.

So I still think entertainment magazines are stupid and I find Paris Hilton annoying. But, maybe I got just a very small taste of what it feels like to be famous… and a little bit of respect for those people who will do anything to stay in the public eye.
