In all seriousness, how do you take this picture?
I mean shouldn’t you be running panicking? Don’t people in the Midwest usually have a basement for moments like this? I can’t decide if it’s courage or stupidity. Or maybe, like Californians and earthquakes, they’re just bored with the whole thing.

I used to teach photography to high school students and when we’d discuss photojournalism, I’d ask them if they could calmly take a picture of something like this or maybe a naked screaming little girl running toward you to escape the fire and bombing of her village. We talked about those instincts — to run, to help, to fall apart. You never know. BTW, where DID this picture come from?

Hi Cathy!
Actually, I just found it on Yahoo under their “Most Emailed Pictures” section. Thankfully, this tornado was very short lived and didn’t harm any people.
But you’re right that instinct to stay neutral and document what’s happening rather than get involved (or in this case save your butt) must just come naturally to some people.
